Nombori (also spelled Nombouri) is in the heart of the Dogon bread basket, and comes on you quite suddenly out of towering millet fields. It is tucked securely between the magnificent escarpment and the tall, rolling dunes. Its name means “the damp cold place where the water stays,” but everything is relative. If you happen to be on foot and coming from the south, follow the museum sign from the main road and over 5 km of rocky uneven trail to arrive in the village.
